Cocktail bar with live music Edinburgh

The "Stramash" in Edinburgh, Scotland, is a cocktail bar that goes far beyond the classic definition and has made a name for itself as one of the liveliest live music bars in the city. Located in the heart of the Old Town, it is housed in a former church that has been transformed into an impressive venue with a capacity of 900 people. The bar belongs to the Old Town Pub Company, which also operates other well-known music venues like Whistlebinkies and The Mash House, and has established itself as an essential part of Edinburgh's nightlife scene since its opening in 2015. The name "Stramash" comes from the Scottish dialect and means something like "tumult" or "commotion," aptly describing the energetic atmosphere of the place.

Best pizzas in Edinburgh to try

The drink selection at "Stramash" is diverse and highlights its status as a cocktail bar, although the focus is clearly on live music. The bar features three counters that offer a wide range of beverages, including a solid cocktail menu with classic and creative mixed drinks to cater to a broad audience. They take particular pride in their extensive selection of whiskies and craft beers, which include both local Scottish favorites and international options. The drinks are often described as affordable and of high quality, making the bar attractive to a mixed crowd. While cocktails are not the main feature, they complement the offering and fit well with the relaxed yet lively vibe of the place.

Venue for private events Edinburgh

Culinarily, "Stramash" offers a menu available until midnight that focuses on hearty, freshly prepared dishes. Particularly popular are the homemade pizzas, often hailed as some of the best in the city, as well as classics like burgers and nachos, which pair perfectly with an evening of music and drinks. The kitchen is designed to satisfy the hunger of guests who stay until the early hours, as the bar is open daily until 3 AM. The food is straightforward yet flavorful, highlighting the laid-back character of the venue, which does not pursue gourmet aspirations but rather focuses on solid pub fare.

Scottish whiskies and craft beers

The heart of "Stramash" is undoubtedly its role as a live music venue. The bar hosts live performances every night of the week from some of the best bands in Scotland and international artists, covering a wide range of genres—from rock to folk to ceilidh, a traditional Scottish dance music. The large stage and excellent acoustics of the former church make it an ideal place for musicians and audiences alike. Especially during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August, the bar becomes a hotspot, with the dance floor brimming with energy. In addition to the music, "Stramash" features the largest HD screen in Scotland, broadcasting all major sporting events—from rugby to football and other big events—making it appealing to sports fans as well.

Historic architecture in Edinburgh bar

The atmosphere of "Stramash" is unique and shaped by its historical architecture. The interior combines rustic elements like exposed brick walls and wooden beams with modern accents that make the space bright and inviting. The venue spans two floors, with the upper level offering a great view of the stage, often referred to as the "mezzanine." The dance floor fills up quickly, especially after 10 PM when the bands start to get the crowd moving. The audience is a vibrant mix—from young people to tourists to older regulars—and the vibe is often described as relaxed yet electrifying. The staff is known for their friendliness and efficiency, although the doormen can occasionally be perceived as strict.

"Stramash" has also established itself as a venue for special occasions. It can be rented for private celebrations and accommodates large groups looking for the best in music, drinks, and food. Its location in the Old Town makes it easily accessible and a perfect starting point for a night out in Edinburgh. The bar has received numerous awards, including the Travellers’ Choice Award from Tripadvisor, underscoring its popularity and quality.

Was entering with a small group of friends on a stag and got racial slurs from the bouncers that "no irish potatoes allowed in tonight " absolutely appalling behaviour! There's a joke and there's beyond on a joke and sadly this was was beyond on a joke. Bouncers getting aggressive and defensive for no reason whatsoever! It's sad to see racial slurs still play a part in the world today! Glad we didn't give this business a penny of our money!
